Hey trash delvers! Tonight we sent out the REVIEW copy of the Garbage & Glory PDF.
Some of you LOVE diving into PDFs early and finding the things that our eyes might have missed. If you find any editing issues, please send an email to [email protected] with the subject G&G Review by the end of the day on 2/23 so we can make adjustments, finalize the PDF and update the file. You will receive notification from DriveThruRPG once it is updated to the final version.
Thank you for your help, patience, and support.

Hello Trashy People!
I’ve been holding off on an update, hoping to be able to deliver the digital book at the same time. Unfortunately, It’s just not quite ready yet, and I don’t want to wait any longer to update you.
Garbage & Glory has now been through the first pass of layout. Matthias has done a great job! As always. There’s a reason we keep working with him! Of course, in a book topping 170 pages, there’s lots of room to miss out on small details like keeping indentation consistent, making changes to where the text is colored, and finding sometimes extra, sometimes missing punctuation. I want to emphasize how absolutely normal this process is. There are many, many details to look at at every stage of production. We are looking at and correcting all those small details. We are also put together some extras for the book like a trash-themed X-Card, and spell list check sheets for the different types of magic.
The book will be through its second layout pass soon and then we’ll send it to you all for a final crowd-sourced check for typos before we send it to print. The core book will be manufactured in USA, so while there is always uncertainty in manufacturing, at least the book won’t be subject to international shipping uncertainties.
Next update will be when the digital is available for download! Below are some sample pages.
Thanks!
Matt
Garbage & Glory Ready for Layout

Hey Trash Fans!
Here’s another progress update to close out 2024. The manuscript came back from editing while we were at Pax Unplugged. After a bit of a post-convention rest, I started working through the suggested edits. Sarah is great, and I mostly accepted her edits. We improved the consistency of when numerals are used and when a number gets written out. She also found one time an NPC name was misspelled. Some text was clarified. There were more format inconsistencies to iron out in the Stories as well. This is all normal finial changes stuff. It’s why it’s important to bring in someone who hasn’t been looking at the book every day so they can see it with fresh eyes.
The last step of the process was to put in the layout notes for where Matthias needs to put all of Sam’s art. The Threats go with their Threat and the character portraits go with their Callings, but not every art file is named what the game calls it, so it’s good to be explicit to match up what goes where. We also have some large pieces which will be full page in the book, so I also decided where to place those.
I wrapped up my work on this stage on Monday this week, so the news is Garbage & Glory is now ready for lay out! Matthias is finishing up with the Never Going Home stretch goal collections, then will move on to Garbage & Glory. It’ll be at least a couple weeks for him to do that, then I have to look at again and make sure it’s looking like I want it to – then you all will see it! At this stage in a project, it’s hard to be exact with dates, so I will continue to not name a date. Expect more news in January.
Until then, I’ve got two things for you all. First, a little selection of the text. Something you can add into your game if you have the quickstart. The Smashcan!
Smashcan
The False Trashcan is one of the most contradictory creatures in alliance with the Ogres. Rarely seen or at least reported on by survivors, yet found in any and all environments. Many Masks believe it to be a myth or cautionary tale for kits, and those who have encountered one speak of nothing but terror. Looking like a pristine and mundane trash can, it’s impossible to know how many Smashcans exist. It’s impossible to tell the difference between a Smashcan and a beautiful garbage can, until one tries to open it. Once within chomp or touch range, a Smashcan will animate and try to swallow its chosen prey in one slurping gulp. If a Mask is daring enough to hunt down a Smashcan, they will find a trove of all the collected garbage and trinkets kept from its previous meals. Some Junk Composers swear they can spot a hiding False Trashcan with one weird trick, claiming that using either a metal can that is semi-matte, orris root that is boiled, or a pungent shoe that has been cooked, will cause a Smashcan to sneeze or shy away.
Type: Solo Initiative Value: 4 Armor: None Brawn: 4 Smarts: 2 Guts: 3 Weapons: Bite: 2 damage Skills/Abilities: - Sneak: (X) (X) (X) (X) ( ) - Just a Box: This ability is always active. If a Smashcan is not moving, it is identical to a normal garbage bin. Other than a TN 5 Snoop roll, the only way to tell a Smashcan from its mundane counterpart is to either touch it and notice it’s slimy exterior, or notice it about to attack. - Gulp (Brawn) (X) (X) (X) ( ) ( ): A Smashcan’s main attack targets Brawn. Lunging forward, the Smashcan opens its maw and tries to swallow a Gatherer or chosen prey, slurping it down in one bite. If a Gulp attack is successful, the defender is caught and stuck in its gooey insides. In 5 rounds, the Smashcan’s prey will be swallowed whole and stuck in the stickiest glue traps of legend. For each success beyond the victim’s defense, reduce the rounds before they are swallowed by 1. Weakness: None Reward: 3 Garbage for each character. 2 Glory for the Mask to share.
Lastly, here is the most recent video I recorded with creators of G&G stretch goals. Brigitte Winter and Dustin Patrick Winter are part of Scryptid Games design collective, publishers of Against the Gloom, Ball of the Wild, and Psychic Trash Detectives. We mostly talk about their designer origin story and this year’s trip to Metatopia. We also hear from them about the psychic Calling and the fun NPCs they created for the game. If you don’t know Brigitte and Dustin or their work, give a watch and get to know them!
Until next time! Matt
Garbage & Glory Text to the Editor!

Hello Garbage Gatherers!
A big update today – the Garbage & Glory book has gone to editing!
I sat down three weeks ago with a list of five things I knew I needed to double-check or tweak. Since then, I have corrected or improved 44 elements of the game. Sometimes the wrong Calling name was used, there were too many different example characters, some of Threats didn’t have damages listed for their natural weapons, and on and on. All of that has been cleared up now. Currently, the text is being checked for my silly typos, for rules clarity, and word agreement. Plus, we are discussing which terms will be presented in capitals and which will not. All of this is always part of bringing a game manuscript written by four different people together into one final document.
When we sent out the original emails in summer 2022, inviting the writing team onto the project, we were imagining a 24,000 word manuscript and a short and sweet project. Since funding the game in summer 2023 we have found so many opportunities to expand the world just a little bit more. More options for character creation (originally, they didn’t have a choice of special abilities), places to explore (how could I have forgotten the suburbs?), lengthier spell descriptions (what does a magical blast of power look like?), more Threats (Wyrms and Terror Tires). None of which were part of the original concept. The game didn’t seem complete without this extra material. Even now, we haven’t covered everything! The text of the game is now over 42,000 words! This makes Garbage & Glory basically tied for our third biggest book ever (with Never Going Home). I am very happy with what we’ve developed and am so excited for you all to see it!
To that end, here’s a bit of new text for you – the Mess Magus Calling.
The Magus was not in the quickstart we did for Free RPG Day 2024. We had to complete that quickstart text in December and January, almost a year ago, to get it produced in time for Free RPG Day in June. It represents a simplification of the game rules at that time. We didn’t include any spells in the quickstart both because of space limitations, and because they weren’t finished then. I hope you enjoy these clips of game text which will let you create a Mess Magus with a couple spells.
You’ll get the next big update when the manuscript goes to layout, which should be in December.
If you will be at Pax Unplugged in Philadelphia on December 7-9, come see us at Booth 3744.
Thank you for your support and patience.
Matt
To create a treasure-seeking Raccoon, first think of the type of adventurer you’d like to play. Select a name and declare your first title. Then choose your Calling. Your Calling sets your basic ways of interacting with the world, fills in six of your attribute ranks, gives you a choice of both a unique ability and a unique skill, plus two general skills. To complete character creation, assign four more ranks to your attributes. Then select two more skills and assign four more points of training across your five skills. Lastly, select your starting equipment and draw your starting hand of three Garbage and two Glory.
Mess Magus I have studied the writings back to Trash-Co. Now, I can see your future in the shiny foil. A scrap of tin can is all that’s needed to slice through the biggest Ogre. The egg carton and a spell are all I need to create armor to stop a Jaw-Jaw. Soft feathers from the Goose Dragon and I can put an entire village to sleep. I have learned the secrets and pursued the true power of Garbage! Well, that’s the theory, at least.
Reduce You have learned to animate that which was thrown away. Discard a Garbage card as an action to create a small animated creature called a “rubbish”. This creature has 1 in Brawn, Smarts, and Guts automatically. For each additional Garbage card you discard, you may raise a single attribute one rank or give the rubbish a single skill training point. A rubbish can carry a message or perform a simple task before it reverts to trash.
Recycle By studying the true nature of Garbage, you can peer a moment forward in time, and predict the trashy future. Before another character draws 1 or more cards from the Garbage deck, you may look at the top card only to see what’s in store, then decide to keep it on the top or move it to the bottom of the deck.
Special Skills
Trash Magic [Smarts] (X) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) Long study of the hidden nature of trash lets you employ uncommon solutions to modern problems. Select spells from the Trash Magic Spells or General Spells list. One spell per point you put into this skill.
Reuse [Guts] (X) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) You can channel your power to other creatures. With a successful Reuse roll you add any of the listed effects to another’s weapon, or to your own. The TN for each effect is listed below. Most effects last until the next attack the creature makes. For each point in Reuse, a Mess Magus may affect an additional creature at the same time. The effects are mostly similar to weapons augments. But the attacker does not need to send successes on them because the magic effect has already been applied.
Blur This spell blurs the edges of the target’s appearance into a series of ragged after-images as they accelerate through the world. The caster selects a creature they can see and rolls their spellcasting skill: TN 3 to allow the target to take a second turn at the end of the current combat round. Outside of combat, Blur simply allows the target to move more quickly. Augments: +1 target (2), effect lasts one extra round (2)
Trap On a successful spellcasting skill roll: TN 2 lines of glowing force assemble local materials into a trap at a target location within melee range of the caster. Trap does no damage by default, but can hold a creature with 4 or less Brawn in place for one minute once the trap activates. Creatures with 5 or more Brawn are still delayed one action by the Trap. A TN 4 roll is required for others to evade or disarm the magical Trap. If Trap is not activated, it fades at the next dawn. Augments: deal 1 damage when activated (2), +1 TN to evade Trap (1)

Hey everyone! First and foremost, we apologize that there has been a delay in this project. We're moving forward as quickly as possible, and trying to make sure we're getting things right. Now that this is getting the full attention of our RPG Publication efforts, we were able to identify some of the issues we had with the manuscript and are working on making those corrections in editing. This process has taken a lot longer that we anticipated, but the end is in sight. Our creative director anticipates this will be wrapped up by the last week of November. We are all tired of this lingering in development and editing hell.
We do have some good news to report though. Almost ALL of the stretch goal writing and development is complete. We had two developers who had to drop off the project due to personal reasons, but they have been replaced and the work reassigned. All of this material will go to graphic design and layout at the same time as the core book so you will have access to all that material at the same time once PDFs are delivered.
We also noticed some discussion about our upcoming card game HERD and how that project may be syphoning resources and development team capacity from this project, and we want to assure you that this IS NOT the case. Wet Ink Games runs multiple development teams concurrently which all have different timetables, schedules, and project management which is why some projects go more quickly than others. We've fulfilled HOME, Zero Day War, and Never Going Home over the past few months, because each one had it's own dev and support teams. Garbage & Glory is the same way. Each development team and project is different, and has it's own unique challenges, most of which do not prevent continued development in other projects.
Please understand that we're dedicated to bringing you the best product we can and will continue to work to improve our development methods as we go forward.
We were able to speak to many of you at GenCon and GameHole Con this year, and it was great to put some faces with the backer names we've seen time and time again. We always value your support and never take it for granted. So again, we say a huge THANK YOU.
